Let the Games Begin!

Or, any excuse for me to create a thematic dinner. Some time ago I discovered this set of cookbooks at a tag sale. The books were published in 1968 and make for entertaining reading as well as inspiration.
From around the house I pulled together my treasures from the former Eastern Europe for our Russian-inspired table. The platter and blue plates are Polish; the mats, Bulgarian; the runner, Romanian; and the vase, Czechoslovakian crystal.
With the parade of nations underway, our own culinary parade began. Blinis with caviar were up first. Store-bought, but hey, they worked.

Followed by homemade Ukrainian Borscht.
We paused to cheer Team USA!  At first I was disappointed that my television photo blurred, but we all decided the uniforms were ugly anyway, so this is an improvement.
The main course? Beef Stroganov, of course.
Our dinner ended with Russian torte on Ukrainian dessert plates against a backdrop of the hammer and sickle and Peter the Great's Troika horse. A striking and mighty opening ceremony. With no political overtones at all.
We have lots to cheer in these games. There are three ice dancing teams from our alma mater, and three ice hockey players, as well, one of whom is playing for Austria. For the next two weeks it's Go Blue! Go Team USA! and Go Team Austria!
Let the Games Begin!

    1. Thanks. You just need to add Poland, Romania and Bulgaria to your travel list. Easy-peasy.
