Condiments

Along the endless shopping street of Mariahilfer Straße sits a Merkur. The best way I can describe Merkur is “Wegmans without the chaos.” Beautiful produce displays, enticing cheese counter, and wide varieties of lebensmittel to choose from.  A great store from which to start a series on my adventures in Austrian grocery shopping. Rather than starting with an expose on Austrian cheese, or perhaps their Gruner Veltliners, though, I shall start with “Condiments.”

Heinz versus Kuner,  “Austria’s best loved sauces,” or so my translation of the label goes.  In the mood for Kuner’s Curry sauce, or do you want to try Heinz’ Mango Curry with your roast chicken?  Or perhaps “Hot India” to spice things up? Just picked up some fresh Zander from the Naschmarkt? How about Knoblauch (garlic) sauce, or fancy-pants Krauter Knoblauch (garlic and herbs) for that grilled fish?
With the weather being so hot, maybe brush some Karibik sauce on your Jerk chicken for that island experience, man.  Missed Cinco de Mayo and the Fourth of July?  Worry not!  Celebrate your own Independence Day with Kuner’s “American” sauce, containing cilantro, jalapeños, and red onion.
Personally, we’re reserving a quiet dinner by candlelight for Heinz’ “Exotic” sauce.
